New Construction Roofing in San Antonio, TX
New roofing construction is very different than the repairing or a replacement of a roof. Construction means building the entire roof from scratch, which includes everything from the sheathing to the flashing. Actual roofing construction is needed when building a new home that has never had a roof, or if the old roof has been damaged beyond repair which is most likely due to natural disasters such as tornadoes. Whichever the case may be, it is crucial that your property’s roof is constructed with the utmost care and precision. Making sure that your roofing system functions flawlessly will help your roof perform at its very best for a very long time.
Constructing a Roof
The Framing
Framing is the first step of construction and is just what it sounds like. It’s constructing the frame in which the rest of the roof will be built upon. This is when the pitch of the roof will be determined.
The Pitch
Determining the proper pitch is extremely important. Factors that go into the pitch not only include the plans and aesthetics, but also the materials that will be used. Certain roofing materials are not compatible with low slopes and can actually put your roofing system at risk. When it comes to the pitch of your roof, you will want to decide on your roofing material ahead of time.
Trusses
Trusses provide support for the roof, keep your roof from falling down, and are installed after the framing. They will support a large amount of weight, and are a critical part of construction as they will need to support the full weight of the materials used during and after the construction process.
Sheathing
The sheathing is a plywood material that is fixed onto the framing and forms the base of the roof. In warmer climates such as here in San Antonio, sheathing is commonly made with aluminum on one side to help reduce heat on the roof.
Drip Edge
The drip edge is a piece of metal that hangs over the edge of the roof and is designed to further protect the sheathing from rain and water damage.
Underlayment
Then comes the underlayment which is simply a protective layer over the sheathing. Also known as felt paper or tar paper, roofing underlayment is another barrier of protection from the outside elements. Today, synthetic underlayment is typically used because it is considered more durable and less likely to deteriorate over time. Until about 15 to 20 years ago tar paper was commonly used, but this practice is less popular due to the longevity of synthetic underlayment.
Roofing Material
Then comes the actual roofing material. Depending on the climate, aesthetics, and the pitch of the roof, choosing the roofing material is usually the more exciting part of the roofing build for the owner.
